Unit 2- One-to-One tutorial

Image
I had a one-to-one tutorial during my workshop this week. We discussed how my work has gone up until this point and I feel there is potential now to develop from this I intend on completing more research into the Kulhar and completing some primary research on it too. I feel confident in the path my project is taking; creating change through informing the world about sustainable cultural traditions.

Unit 2- Developing the Zine

Image
I printed the final layout of the  zine  and cute up the illustrations and re-stuck them on black a4 card. I felt the black added another depth to the images and set an effective backdrop for them. I then drew over the illustrations and titles as the printer had made the lines appear faint. I also added captions to make the images more apparent in their message. This is the photocopy of the above piece. I used my home printer and so the quality is low. I plan on printing these at college with a better quality printer. This is a print i did at college, I've written edits I'd like to take. I enjoy the coloured effect as it appears like a risograph print- which is something I'd like to experiment with in the future.

Unit 2- Making the Zine

Image
After completing my planning and organising its content, I decided to create a draft in order to see the how successful my plan would be and also plan ways to improve. It was important for me to do this prior to printing as it would reduce the risk of wasting money and printing time. This is a factor I had to consider as Zine's are traditionally used by artists to voice their opinions without censorship or monetary restrictions. I decided to create my zine digitally, as I intended on adding colour to make it more cohesive.  I hand-drew the pages and then scanned them into Adobe Illustrator to add colour. These are my original illustrations: Below is the final, official print and layout I made for the zine. I added just the colour brown to the images as that's the colour of the clay that the cups are made out of- I feel it makes the images more cohesive. One thing I plan on improving on is the lack of captions- I intend on creating another print that has handwritten captions t...

Unit 2- Planning for making a zine

Image
During my second workshop, I created a Zine. This is the mind map of ideas I produced: I decided to focus on the idea of sustainable traditions and so based my zine on a 'kuhlar' cup. This is the research I did into them: And this is a documentation of my decision into which storyline to progress with: I used post-it notes to organise the order of my story line an clarify which caption and illustrations to use. I then completed some research in order to inform my illustrations and their style of drawing. So as to avoid mistake and wasted money on printing, I created a grid layout to use when formatting my zine digitally.

Unit 2- Planning moving forward

Image
This are some examples of the notes I took at this point in the project that planned the approaches and steps I would take moving forward.

Unit 2- Developing digital work for positive change

Image
I decided I would develop my work further and create a poster campaign using the concept of 'crabs' and 'kicking'.  This is a sketch of the composition I first came up with during the workshop. I want to create a poster that utilises the crab character to address the issue of overfishing. I intend on this poster being in a similar style to the WPA posters I have  previously researched.   I then decided to research on the topic of over-fishing in order to fuel my project with factual information: This is then the planning I completed: And this is the outcome:

Unit 2- Developing monster drawings to digital

Image
I took my ink illustrations further and decided to edit them on Adobe Illustrator, I enjoyed getting to grips with this new tool and exploring its possibilities.  This is the planning that took place for the development of this ink splurge : This is the 'Karate Krab' outcome: I used 'colour.adobe.com' (7) to create colour palettes for the crab.   I decided to switch to this more muted colour palette as it was more realistic to the colours of a crab. Also, my plan to integrate him into a campaign poster required a beach scene and so the blues in this palette could also be used.

Unit 2- Character Development with Stefan Butcher's 'Daily Monsters'

Image
'The process of drawing for me has always been a process of failure'- Stefan Bucher (6) This workshop taught me both how to create characters in an interesting way as well as honouring the creative process. This is how I viewed the session: 1. Blowing the ink A random  process, I had little to no control over the outcome.  2. Drawing over the ink I adapted to the random outcome and customised it to change it into something I wanted. I took inspiration from the leafy dragons found under the sea. 3. Editing it digitally I had complete control over the process.

Unit 2- Planning my approach

Here is a documentation of the planning I did before launching into the project, I found this useful for grounding my goals and ideas later on.
