Unit 1- Cut and Construct Workshop

Image
This was my first ever workshop on my Art and Design Foundation Course. The aim was to produce a visual, 3d piece as an interpretation of the visual mind-map I had created. I found this challenging as I'm not used to working with physical construction material such as toothpicks and cardboard, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and learned a lot about generating ideas and experimenting. I was inspired by Tillman Kaiser, of whom appears in my visual mind-map, to construct 'Gewinnspiel' into a physical piece. I liked exploring shape and how they can intersect each other as well as the way perspective can change a piece of art entirely. I used cutting, puncturing, slotting and suspending. I would improve this next time by using a thicker material such as cardboard as the thin card bent when slotting. Diamond Construction Circle Construction I was also inspired by the symmetrical flower that appeared in my visual mind-map.  I explored balance and symmetry with this piece. It also lo...

Unit 1- Brief Mind-Map

To further inform my understanding of the brief, I produced both a visual and a word mind-map. This is the word mind-map I produced, I used grid paper to make organising the page easier. It focuses on my interpretation of what the brief is asking me to do and documents my thought processes and initial ideas. This is the visual mind-map. I initially stuck the images I created in a page in my sketchbook and wasn't satisfied with the way it looked. So I decided to take pictures of them and import them to 'Pages' on my laptop and arrange them into a more aesthetically pleasing collage style mind-map.  This one explores some of the principles and elements mentioned in the brief, such as colour and balance.

Unit 1- Principles and Elements Research

After receiving the brief, I decided to explore the topic of elements and principles as I had no previous understanding of this. I found it useful to observe artist's work that related to the principle or element I was researching as I find I am a visual learner. I used a code to create a correlation between these artists and the element/principle I related them to- as shown below. I also made a more simple list of definitions so I can revert back to these when writing visual analysis. Lastly, I quickly researched and analysed some of the artists mentioned during the brief. I would specifically like to explore Michael Foreman more.

Unit 1- 'Principle Features' Brief

After being assigned the brief in class, I took it home and highlighted the key words to ensure I had a good understanding of what I was being directed to do. I also rewrote it in my own notes so I could look back on these over the course of my project- as shown below.
