PREP SKETCHBOOK UPDATE - FMP

This blog post summarises my prep sketchbook for my FMP. Generating ideas and experimenting with possibilities are the favourite part of my projects, so I really enjoyed this start to my FMP and I feel this is clear in the amount of research I produced and experiments I conducted.

I am documenting this during my Easter break, and so I have mostly finalised my ideas and coming to finish my Project Proposal, although there are still some minor changes and affirmations that need to be made.

SWOT ANALYSIS FOR UNIT 2

In order to ensure that my skills develop even more after unit 2 and I bring my best attributes into the FMP, I completed a SWOT analysis of my previous project:

Completing this analysis helped me to realise my strengths and weaknesses within my creative practice and I used what I discovered to create a tick list of goals for my FMP to complete. Looking back on this task, I really feel it's helped me so far as I was able to lay the groundwork for what skills I wanted to work on and develop during this project.

This is the list I created in response to this SWOT analysis and also a 1-1 tutorial with my tutor:

ANALYSING THE BRIEF

I find annotating and highlighting the brief extremely helpful for my creative practice, as I get an in depth understanding of what the brief is asking of me, what elements are most important to the brief and what sort of project topic is expected.

CONSOLIDATING AN ORIGINAL TIME-PLAN

This is the first time plan I created, it's broad and outlines the main deadlines I need to work to. This has been extremely helpful, as it's laid out clearly and I can count the weeks/days until my next deadline and work accordingly to that. Also, having my aims and key dates on the page also helps me remember what skills I mainly want to work on in this project and has ensured that I work toward this.

There is still space to be filled and I left this purposefully as I want this to be a working timetable to add to as I learn new deadlines, goals and also come up with the title of my project (there's space at the top for this.) It's important that my time-plans remain working and natural so I can add to them as this reflects my creative practice, that is often organic yet I do like to plan ahead.

MIND-MAPS

I find mind-maps extremely helpful for getting all my ideas on the page and visualising my options. Also, I am able to write down further thoughts on each idea and can therefore see which idea is the most developed and has the most potential.

This is the first, mini mind-map I produced right after being given the brief. I wanted to write down all the ideas I had in my head that had stored up over my half-term.

And this is the larger, final mind-map I created. I interview my family, boyfriend and best friends to find out what words they associated with me and intended to use one of these as my project topic. This was important to me as I wanted my FMP to be a personal project, given that my previous one was more focused on the community. So, it was useful to find out what topics I and others felt were relevant to me and my passions.

The 3 words that I took from this and wanted to experiment with were: Strawberry, moon and family.

PRACTICALLY RESPONDING TO MY TOPIC OPTIONS

BLACKOUT POETRY

I used the concept of blackout poetry to create practical outcomes for my 3 possible topic choices: family, strawberry and the sun & moon. This technique was useful as I had to identify words that associated with the topic and therefore consider what paths I could go down with each topic. It also forced me to find reading material on each topic as I had to use it to create poems and this revealed to me how much resources are available for my choices of topic.

These are the poems I produced for the topic of FAMILY:

This was my first attempt at the technique, hence the dodgy pen work. Although, I do enjoy the visible scribbles and transparency as they tell a story of someone that desperately wants to discover the history of their family.

I did fear that this topic was too common and has been explored already in depth in the art world.

This poem was my favourite as it feels really personal to me and has made me consider this topic in a new light. Exploring my family from my perspective and discovering what they mean to me.

This is the poem I produced for the topic STRAWBERRY:

This task made me consider what the concept of strawberry mean to me: food, taste, and texture but also sweet and memories 'of June'.

I decided to include some of the pictures of strawberries as I feel their appeal is primarily through their appearance and so I wanted to apply this to the poem.

This is the poem I produced for the topic SUN & MOON:

This task made me realise that the moon is just as relevant as the sun in culture, religion and art. And so if I were to choose this topic it would be about both the sun and the moon.

WORD ASSOCIATIONS

The blackout poetry task showed me that I didn't want to go with the 'Family' topic as I felt it was overdone and already addressed in the art world, so I now wanted to focus on the two topic options of: Strawberry and the Sun & Moon.

This task involved creating a mind-map and mood-board for each topic. Then identifying 4 words from the mind-map and listing words associated with them. And finally choosing 3 words from that list to come up with ideas for practical approaches to those words. And then choosing one of these approaches and carrying it out.

Word association for the topic STRAWBERRY:

I decided to go with the practical approach of 'potato print/ vegetable print shapes and create unique strawberry characters' to show how strawberries come in a variety of shapes and sizes. I used other fruit and vegetable to print strawberry characters:

Completing this task made me think about this topic on a more practical level. When thinking of practical responses to the words associated with 'strawberry' I struggled to think of an abundance of ideas and I feel I want my chosen topic to be endlessly inspiring for me, considering it has to last me for 17 weeks.

Word association for the topic MOON & SUN:

I chose to respond to the word 'sky' by creating them with cling film. I scrunched up the cling film and wrapped it around loo roll and painted colours that reminded me of the sky during the day and then during the night.

This exercise encouraged me to recognise the colours and textures that surround the sun and the moon.

I wanted to develop these textures further and explore the word 'balance' with the patterns I had created with the cling film. By positioning the lifer and dark skies and the sun and the moon the viewer can see how the sun and moon are both similar and different.

Producing these physical outcomes and experimenting with word associations and ideas showed me that the most enriching topic would be the sun and the moon. This is because there are lots of resources on the sun and moon and it hasn't been over subscribed in the art world.

CREATING AN ALPHABET FOR MY FMP

After choosing the topic of the sun and moon, I created an alphabet of words associated with this topic. This helped me actualise the topic I'd like to  address with my work and I have found it very useful to refer back to when I'm stuck for ideas.

At this point, I realised that focusing on just the moon would give me enough inspiration to last me for my FMP and so I decided just to go with the topic of the moon.

PECHA-KUCHA PRESENTATION

This is the peach-kucha presentation I created. It was extremely useful for me as it forced me to narrow down my ideas and fully actualise what my FMP would entail and what it was aiming to do.

This is all the feedback I received on my presentation. I found this extremely useful for narrowing down my ideas and also thinking of new ones.

TIME PLAN FOR THIS POINT ONWARDS

To end my prep for my FMP, I created this time plan. It is more in depth and I have referred back to it and altered it several times since. It has been useful for organising my thoughts and planning out my FMP.
