Unit 2- Calligram for postcard quote

Following on from my calligram for the poem by Kelly Roper, I decided to switch to text that I was more familiar with and resonated with my topic even more. I decided to work with the quote I came up with for my postcard: 'the world is cool, when you take a closer look.'

I decided to shape the quote into a paisley design, as I'd discovered upon research that paisleys are a traditional symbol related to Indian culture. I found paisleys on the chai-tea packaging I analysed, on images I found when searching for 'India' in google and when I was brainstorming contact sheets for my topic, I chose to work with a symbol that represented Indian culture as I've found, when researching sustainable traditions, that a majority of them originate from their culture. And so I feel its necessary to celebrate that.

I also have always enjoyed Indian designs, especially through henna. Below are some henna pieces I did and took inspiration from for my paisley design.

This is my first attempt at creating this paisley calligram. I used Photoshop and found it extremely limiting for manipulating text. After a discussion with my tutor, I discovered that 'Illustrator' was a much better system to use.

I then took the design into Illustrator instead and learned the techniques for creating a 'path' and using this for text using tutorials on Youtube.

I then experimented with colour to elevate the paisley and add depth to it. I wasn't keen on this colour palette as I feel the pinks/purples and blues/turquoises were too similar and the yellow wasn't visible enough.

I preferred this colour palette as it was more natural and reflects Indian culture more.

To finalise the paisley, I made some lines bold to add even more depth.
