For my workshop today I brought in 4 objects that related to my chosen topic: sustainable cultural traditions.
Henna hair dye is a sustainable trend in India that provides an alternative to harmful chemical-based hair-dye.
China balm/ Tiger balm is a traditional remedy that relieves muscle pain. Discovered in China , it is a sustainable and long-lasting alternative to medication.
It is Japanese tradition wrap items in cloth when transporting them, this is an effective alternative for plastic wrapping such as cling-film.
| Tin cup from India, a long-lasting material that can sustain wear and tear and therefore is less wasteful. |
It's interesting to observe the words an alternative audience interpreted from them. The words such as 'self-care' and 'clean' tell me that these traditions can be used to benefit the environment as well as ourselves. This has inspired me to research into the mental health benefits of living sustainably. Perhaps I could look into the philosophies and lifestyles to the cultures these traditions belong to.
I created compositions using my objects and my classmates.
I enjoyed incorporating my classmates objects as it made me consider the link between our chosen topics, and how positive change can be created when they're combined creatively; sustainability + autism + environment.
I enjoyed using red and blue pencils as I felt they glided better on the page and so produced smoother, seamless sketches. The different colours could also be used to add definition to the sketch.
This composition was interesting to me as the floral patterned cloth created a sort of 'bouquet' when positioned inside the steel cup. The light bulb added a 'centrepiece.'
