Unit 2- Researching the History of Progressive Art

After annotating the brief and highlighting the key points, I decided to begin my response to it by researching how other artists have addressed ethical topics. I sourced 3 movements of progressive art during the 19th and 20th century. Below is what I discovered.

Works Progress Administration Posters   1936-1943

During the depths of the Great Depression, the US Government became a vital patron of the arts, employing hundreds of artists to create millions of posters promoting positive social ideals and programs. The resulting designs are a significant historical record of steps taken to help the nation recover from economic collapse.

Puck Magazine   1877-1918

Created by Austrian immigrant Joseph Keppler, Puck magazine collared politically driven cartoons that address topics such as war and crisis, equality and justice and community.

The Progressive Artists Group   MID-20TH CENTURY

After India declared independence from colonial British rule, a group of artists establish a new mode of art that celebrated pluralism and secularism in their new age of progression. They drew from traditions in the past in a variety of cultures to push forward a new, inclusive trend in art.
