Unit 1- Print, Relief Printing Workshop
This week I completed a workshop in relief printing. For me the most interesting results occurred when I worked with textured paper that left an interesting pattern in the print. This is because I feel it added another dimension to the piece that stimulates the viewers eye. Also, a meaningful aspect of this workshop was taking inspiration from Kenneth Noland and his use of target-like circles. I used the circle cutout on most occasions as I’m drawn to this shape and its possibilities in the print room- I explored its effect when overlapped with other circles, printed in different colours and also when its subtracted from the print and leaves a simplistic visual.
With regard to the work of Noland, he has once said: 'Art has never used the maximum of technology, only the least. Paint and canvas, or paint and wood, or clay, or stone, or waste steel, or paper. We've all of us had an instinct to use a minimum means.’ Reading this has made me consider my technique within the print room and the tools I used. And I do agree; I used cutouts that were leftover scraps from a previous project and a restricted amount of Lino and ink. This philosophy has inspired me to work like this in my future assignments as it enables me to become resourceful and work within a limit and therefore inadvertently expand my creative thinking and problem solving.
Within this workshop, I was conscious of my decisions when choosing colours and I’ve outlined this in the analysis below. Some prints are part of a ‘series’ that have been pieced together according to their likeness in colour and unified visual and I feel this has given me the opportunity to have an insight into colour.
Having analysed my work and read about the work and philosophies of Kenneth Noland, I now feel I need to further explore the techniques that are available to me within the print room and ways I can develop my original ideas. I find the idea of creating prints that convey a political/ethical message exciting and exploring this would bring something personal into my work. As a next step I need to research some possible political ideas I can bring into the print room in my next session.
This is a document of individual analysis I did for a selection of my favourite prints:
