Unit 1, Print, Henry Matisse cutouts

Henry Matisse played a major role in the world of print-making and abstraction. His contribution to the Bauhaus movement switched the norm in art from imitating reality to discovering pure forms. He cut out shapes from large sheets of painted paper and created simple motifs of which he arranged on a canvas.

Matisse took great inspiration from Morocco and Tahiti, which became his sources for motifs, subjects, light and colours.

These are some of my favourite pieces from his cutout series.

I also discovered a sticker book from my childhood (shown below).

It is based on Matisse's cutouts and it's interesting observing what I created from a young age using the same inspiration I have now. I copied the works displayed to me using stickers of individual motifs provided in the book.

I then used the leftover stickers to create my own pieces. These are the notes I made prior.

This is the initial work that I produced.

And this is my reflection.

Below is some work I produced after my reflection. I feel they provide more unity and balance. As well as having a visual purpose.
